In February at our preschool we talked about friendship and Valentine’s Day and had a friendship tea party. The children drew pictures for their family and preschool friends . We asked them what they loved about their family and then we wrote it on the picture and made it into a card. When the cards were done, the kids delivered them using our pretend post office.
There is one little boy, who I will call “E”, who is very comfortable expressing his emotions. If he is having fun with an activity he will say, “Ms. Dina, I love you.” So “E” really embraced Valentine’s Day. Our friendship unit inspired him to express his love for his friend “M”. Unfortunately, “M” didn’t reciprocate the sentiment. “M” replied, “Well I don’t love you.” I felt horrible when I saw the look on “E”‘s face. I could feel his little heart breaking with that answer. After a little intervention on my part, “M” elaborated and said, “I only love my family.” This just shows unrequited love can start as early as preschool!
